Make Sinterklaas's birthday extra special with this spicy rooibos tea. It is a flavored blend of rooibos and spices.

What does Pepernoten Parody taste like?

Pepernoten Parody is a tasty spicy rooibos tea blend full of herbs and spices such as coriander, almond, pistachio, citrus and red pepper. Herbs that evoke the smell and taste of gingerbread nuts and are also used to make gingerbread, spice nuts and speculaas.

Taste Pepernoten Parody Tea

The basis of Pepernoten Parody is rooibos. Rooibos tea itself has a mild, almost woody, creamy taste in which the hint of both honey and vanilla can be recognized. Rooibos is therefore the ideal basis for this Sinterklaas tea.

What are pepernoten / spice nuts?

Although it is often thought that kruidnoten are the same as pepernoten. According to bakers, there is indeed a difference between these two delicacies. Kruidnoten are crunchy semi-circular crunchy cookies made with gingerbread spices that are often eaten before and during the Sinterklaas party. Pepernoten are irregularly shaped and are made according to the traditional recipe for taaitaai, from rye flour with anise flavour. Anyway, we call kruidnoten just plain pepernoten. That is why we have called this Sinterklaas tea Pepernoten Parody!

What is rooibos?

The Latin name of Rooibos is Aspalathus linearis. This plant belongs to the legume family (Leguminosae) and is native to South Africa. The leaves of this plant are used to make 'tea'.

When the plant is 1.5 years old, the leaves are harvested for the first time. The leaves are picked, pounded and placed in the sun for oxidation. During oxidation, the leaves discolor and turn red. Hence the name rooibos. Rooibos contains no caffeine and little tannin and is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, calcium and iron.

Is rooibos tea?

No, officially rooibos is not tea. Rooibos is not a tea plant. Only the leaf of the tea plant can actually be called tea. However, because we actually use rooibos in the same way as tea leaves, both in processing and in use, it is also called tea.

How do you make rooibos tea?

To make rooibos tea, use water that has just come to a boil. Use about 2 grams of tea per cup. As indication; this is a teaspoon of tea (heaped). For a whole teapot you use about 10 grams of tea. For the best result, let the tea steep for about 6 to 8 minutes.

Rooibos contains no tannins, so the tea will not become bitter, even if you let the tea steep for more than 8 minutes.
