Tea is one of Tanzania's most important agricultural products, along with cloves, cashews, coffee, and corn.
This beautiful oolong comes from the tea plantations that have settled on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The tea leaves are picked by hand, have a nice structure, open and brown-black in color.
The color as well as the scent and flavor of this Tanzania Oolong are very special. The tea is aromatic and scents and tastes slightly like malt, is slightly creamy sweet and has a hint of honey.
The color of the tea is reminiscent of the color of amber.
Oolong tea can be placed between green and black tea and also comes from the tea plant. While green tea is not exposed to oxygen (oxidation or fermentation) and black tea is, oolong is only partially oxidized. This can be from 20% to 80%. At a low degree of oxidation, the oolong retains green tea characteristics. With a high degree of oxidation, oolong takes on some of the characteristics of black tea. Nevertheless, oolong has a characteristic aroma and taste palette.
In general, oolong tea has a fruity and slightly sweet character. Light oolongs (moderately oxidized) have a citrus-like character. The taste of the heavier oolongs (more intensely oxidized) is reminiscent of honey, apricot or peach.
To make a nice cup of oolong tea, use water at 85 to 90 degrees Celsius. If you don't have a water thermometer, you can also let boiled water cool for a minute or two. Then let the oolong tea steep for 2 to 5 minutes.
Although oolong is claimed by both China and Taiwan as 'theirs', oolong is now also produced in other countries, including Tanzania.
