Description

Japan is known for its famous green teas, such as Sencha and Matcha, but did you know that black teas are also produced in the land of the rising sun? These teas are also called Wakoucha (和紅茶) in Japan.

The Benifuki cultivar is the most famous black Japanese tea. Sometimes this tea is also called the 'Japanese Oolong'. Benifuuki has a sweet and fruity taste, with notes of nuts.

How does Benifuki taste?

The taste of Benifuki is sweet and fruity with notes of honey and nuts. The malty or woody character that other teas such as Assam and Darjeeling have, for example, do not occur in the Benifuki.

Like any Wakoucha (Japanese black tea), it is better to drink this tea without milk and sugar.

How strong is Benifuki?

Benifuki is naturally not too strong, even if you let the tea steep for longer than usual (>5 minutes). The tea has a low astringency and a mild taste.

Benifuki

Black Japanese tea is very rare. Less than 1% of Japan's annual tea production is devoted to black tea.

Benifuki is a cross of a Darjeeling cultivar (Makura Cd86) and Benihomare. This tea was developed in the 1960s in response to the Japanese government to make Japanese teas more attractive to the European market.

Benifuki gained popularity in the 1990s when researchers discovered that this tea contains high amounts of methylated catechins. These catechins have positive effects on reducing allergies.

Frequently Asked Questions about Benifuki

Do you have a question about using Benifuki? Below we have answered the most frequently asked questions for you.

Besides the fact that Benifuki is a delicious black tea, this tea also offers some health benefits.

Benifuki Tea Can Help Relieve Allergies

Suffering from allergies? Then maybe Benifuki can help alleviate this.

Researchers at Kyushu University in Japan found that Benifuki has the highest concentrations of catechins of all teas. Catachins are antioxidants (polyphenols) that occur naturally in the leaves of plants.

In the case of the Benifuki, catachins are of a different variant, namely the methylated epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), also called methylated catechins.

These methylated catechins block histamine in the human body. If there is too much histamine in your body, you can suffer from, for example, irritation of the skin, nose, throat and lungs, cough or skin rash.

Benifuki can ensure that these complaints are alleviated.

Benifuki tea can help lower blood pressure

Another property of methylated catechins is that it can lower blood pressure in humans.

Research has shown that drinking Benifuki tea resulted in lower blood pressure after 8 weeks.

To make Benifuki, you can use boiling water. Although the tea also tastes very good at lower temperatures (70ºC or 80ºC / 158ºF or 176ºF).

The average brewing time is 3 minutes. It is also possible to let the tea steep for longer, without the tea becoming bitter or astringent.

Benifuki is grown throughout Japan. The Benifuki from our tea shop comes from the region of the city of Kagoshima, which is located in the southernmost part of Japan.

Kagoshima has a humid, subtropical climate. The fertile soil consists largely of volcanic ash that is exceptionally rich in minerals.

In combination with abundant rainfall and the subtropical climate, this area is excellent for growing tea.

Once you open our packaging and don't close it again, Benifuki should be consumed within 3-4 months.

We recommend that you keep the tea sealed in the refrigerator. In this way, Benifuki will remain usable for at least a year.

After that, you can still consume Benifuki, but the flavor and color intensity will be less.
