Our organic Houjicha is a loose green tea from Japan. This tea is not steamed like most Japanese green teas, but roasted over charcoal in a porcelain pot. Because the tea is baked at a high temperature, the color of the tea leaf changes from green to reddish brown.
Because Houjicha is roasted, the bitterness disappears from the tea. The taste is therefore sweet and smoky with caramel notes.
Houjicha is often made from bancha. This is the tea from the last crop of the season.
Once the tea has been brewed, it is light to reddish brown in color. Because the tea is roasted instead of steamed, it tastes less grassy and the amount of caffeine in the tea decreases. Due to its mild character, Houjicha is a good choice to serve during dinner and before going to sleep.
