Gunpowder is a classic green tea from Zhejiang Province, China. After roasting, the leaves are rolled into small balls, making it look like gunpowder. The tea has a somewhat grassy and sometimes smoky taste.
In Chinese, this tea is called 'zhū chá', which means 'pearl tea'. This gunpowder tea is referred to as the 'Temple of Heaven'. This means that the leaves are larger, have a better color and are more aromatic.
The first production of this tea took place 14 centuries ago in Zhejiang, China. Nowadays the balls are rolled by machine, while this used to be done by hand.
This tea is suitable for brewing several times. The ideal water temperature is between 70 ºC and 80 ºC. In addition, this tea is also often used as a basis for a mint tea.
